Black patriotism: steadfast and complicated
Anyone who took U.S. history ought to know that one of the five men killed in the Boston Massacre, the event that ignited the American Revolution, was a runaway slave named Crispus Attucks. The question rarely consider is: Why?
What's unpatriotic is failing to acknowledge that we've struggled with race for nearly 400 years, and pretending that it never happened.

Slavery by Another Name
What Emancipation Didn't Stop
A book by Douglas A. Blackmon documents the re-enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II.
Laws were rewritten to criminalize African-American life. The judicial system was retooled to provide cheap forced labor.
In Alabama and Georgia, where coal and iron ore mining thrived at the end of the 19th century, forced black laborers became a backbone of industry. -This book and its photos may not be easy reading for those sensitive about racial matters. Photo: Prisoner punished in Georgia
Review: I urge you not to read it in isolation, ... but discuss it with a friend--for your own sanity. It is a painful read.-David

African-Americans distrust the rhetoric of political correctness, and continue to see the threat of hidden racism lurking below the surface of America's public conversations.
Racial Paranoia: The Unintended Consequences of Political Correctness explains how this skepticism is cultivated, transferred, and reinforced.
Racial paranoia isn’t just about people being hyper-sensitive. Paranoia is at the center of debates on the possibility of a multiracial America on the verge, maybe, of its first African-American President.

A good walk improves aerobic capacity for older adults
Aerobic capacity is the ability to do the things we want or have to do, like cleaning house or running errands or running a marathon.
A study by the University of Georgia concluded, older adults can decrease their risk of disability and increase their likelihood of maintaining independence, doing the things we want to do, by 41 percent through a walking program. The American Heart Association recommends 20 to 30 minutes of brisk physical activity, which includes walking, at least 3 times a week.
